The best things to do in Warwickshire with your grandchildren

Keeping your grandchildren entertained when they come to visit can feel like a full-time job. Luckily, there are several places for Warwickshire residents that will keep them entertained and enable you to create some wonderful memories together that will last a lifetime. With two retirement communities in Warwickshire and close links to lots of local organisations, we’ve got plenty of recommendations for exciting days out with the grandkids.

Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle has been one of the UK’s most loved attractions for many years, steeped in history, this medieval castle is the perfect day out for you and your grandchildren. Not only is there the castle and beautiful grounds to explore, every day the castle hosts a number of activities and displays, from falconry displays to exploring the 14th-century creepy castle dungeons – so there’s plenty to keep the little ones entertained all day.

Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm

Whether the sun is shining or it’s raining buckets, the Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm won’t fail to disappoint. Discover hundreds of the worlds most beautiful butterflies while navigating through a tropical environment filled with exotic plants, waterfalls and ponds filled with fish. Whether you’re 7 or 70, you’ll be amazed to see butterflies in every colour of the rainbow. After you’ve finished discovering all the different species of butterflies, head to the educational centre where you can learn where they come from and more about the creation of the butterfly farm.

The MAD Museum

Located in Stratford-upon-Avon, the MAD Museum is the only one of its kind in the UK. MAD stands for Mechanical Art and Design so your grandchildren will get the opportunity to interact and gets hands-on learning experience about how mechanical art works. Learn how the gears, sprockets, robotics and eccentric paraphernalia all function with one another at the press of a button. The museum has pieces from artists all over the world, making it an ideal playground for children and adults.

Avonvale MES Miniature Railway

If you’re looking for a cheaper day out, then why not head to Avonvale Miniature Railway and take a ride on the coal-fired steam and diesel engines trains. Travel through tunnels, over and under bridges and around corners, the miniature railway provides a fun ride for both you and your grandchildren, all for only £1 per ride. After you’ve enjoyed your ride on the train, you can head across the road and enjoy a lovely picnic while your grandchildren can finish the day on the playground.

Baddesley Clinton Manor House

Located in the heart of the Forest of Arden, Baddesley Clinton Manor House is a secluded, intimate estate that holds over 500 years of fascinating history. Originally built in the 13th century, this moated manor house has a beautiful courtyard garden, wildflower meadow and gardens, woodland and lakeside walks, and stew ponds. What makes this manor house even more fascinating though, is that it has a secret ‘priest hole’ below the floor level of the house which made Baddesley Clinton a hiding place for persecuted Catholics in the 16th century.
