Finding Therapy in Your Garden

At Inspired Villages Group we know how important it is for you to stay active and enjoy the natural world, whatever your age. And you don’t have to go far to reap the endless benefits of fresh air and exercise – simply venture into your garden or onto your balcony.

Did you know garden gnomes were introduced to England in 1847 by Sir Charles Isham? The vegetarian spiritualist hoped they would lure real gnomes into his garden.

And did you realise a sunflower isn’t just one flower? Each head actually consists of between 1,000 and 2,000 individual flowers.

These facts show just how fascinating – and surprising – our gardens can be.

But another fact that probably won’t surprise you is that gardening is good for you.

At Inspired Villages Group we know how important it is for you to stay active and enjoy the natural world, whatever your age. And you don’t have to go far to reap the endless benefits of fresh air and exercise – simply venture into your garden or onto your balcony.

It doesn’t matter how big your outdoor space is, you can still find therapy through tending to potted plants or growing fruit, vegetables or herbs. Being green-fingered is soothing, relaxing and refreshing, and it also helps to keep you fit and give you a sense of achievement.

And if you’re not as mobile as you once were, there are ways to make gardening more accessible, for example by using raised beds, low hanging baskets and specially-designed tools.

What’s more, retirement is the perfect opportunity to enjoy gardening, even if you’ve downsized, because you probably have a lot more free time. As well as private patio and balcony areas for each apartment or cottage, at Inspired Villages, we’ve created beautiful landscaped communal gardens for you to enjoy with your friends and family.

Plus, many of our residents are keen gardeners who love supporting our gardening teams, from a little bit of pruning to offering help and advice.

Added to this, we hold various gardening events at our villages throughout the year from Q&As with high-profile gardeners such as Jim Buttress, through to gardening competitions.

So, even if your horticultural skills aren’t quite on a par with Alan Titchmarsh or Carol Klein, grab your gardening gloves and trowel and head outside. You’ll feel much better for it!

Keep an eye on our social media for top gardening tips and images from our residents’ stunning balconies and terraces throughout the year @InspiredLifeUK. And if you’d like to see the beautiful grounds of one of our villages or find out more about an Inspired life, please get in touch.

We're also running another competition with our friends at Gardeners World, to be in with the chance of winning £350 worth of planters and houseplants, click here to enter our competition.
